Anne Hathaway shared her social media regrets, and it’s totally understandable
Given how attached to social media and our phones we all are, finding a balance between what gets shared online and what doesn’t can be a tricky thing to manoeuvre. That’s why it’s totally understandable that Anne Hathaway has some regrets about sharing stuff on social media.
At the beginning of this year, Anne Hathaway announced that she was taking a break from social media. The actor, who is currently getting heaps of praise for her turn in the movie Colossal, shared an emotional message onto Instagram in which she announced the break, while also asking her followers to “trust deeper and love freer and light the way the best we are able into 2017.”
Now Anne Hathaway has spoken more about her decision to step away from social media, and it’s pretty understandable.
Speaking in an interview with Jezebel, the actor was quizzed about her departure from Instagram, and she noted that she’d found a way to share things with the world without compromising herself.
“I’m happy to post on Instagram Stories, because I feel like I can be a little freer and a little looser,” she explained. “But the Instagram stuff… it’s going to stick around for as long as anybody cares to look for what is there.”
Continuing, Hathaway explained that she felt like she’d overstepped the social media mark by sharing a picture of her son onto the platform.
"I had never posted a photo of my son, and I decided to post a shot of the back of his head, and almost as soon as I’d done it, I wished that I hadn’t. I felt like I had broken some kind of a seal in inviting people into my life," she admitted. "And even though I felt as though I had done it in as protective a way as I could, even though it was a moment I was incredibly proud of, I don’t know that I’ll ever do it again. I’m a big believer that you gotta mess things up sometimes to really see them properly, so if I made a mistake or I messed up, I know how I feel about it much better now."
The picture in question sees the back of Anne Hathaway’s son’s head while he watches his mom speaking for International Women’s Day at the United Nations.
As Anne explained, it all had to do with how society has changed it’s approach to what social media means.
“Instagram, when I first started, it was so much fun. And it was a great way to be silly and kind of do things off the cuff,” she said. “And now, because of the time we live in, I think words and pictures are carrying a much greater weight. Or, much less depending on how you engage with it.”
Of course, there is no wrong or right way to approach how one engages with social media and what one decides to share on platforms; that’s up to the individual to decide.
However, we do totally get where Anne Hathaway is coming from, and understand that, for her, it all became too much.
Anne Hathaway’s new movie Colossal opens this Friday, April 7th.
