Anne Hathaway shared an illustration that perfectly captures what’s wrong with the transgender protection rollbacks
There has been a lot of necessary discussion this week about transgender rights, and specifically the freedom for students to choose the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, not simply their biological sex. It seems absurd that this is even being debated, because because we’ve come so far toward equality that it would be devastating to turn backwards now.
Anne Hathaway posted an illustration on Instagram that captures the issue perfectly, and raises awareness about the struggle that transgender youth go through in just having a safe place to go to the bathroom.
Her accompanying message is just as thought-provoking.
"Grown Ups: Exercise your compassion and get your head out of your fear. TransKids: Everything is going to be okay, and this is not your fault. You are 100% normal and you matter. Non-Trans Kids: Please listen to your light and do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
We should be able to choose the restroom that mosts aligns with our gender, not what sex we were assigned at birth.
Positive change happens slowly — as long as we continue to fight courageously and educate others on the reasons why this is an urgent matter. Let’s put our best foot forward and join in.
Thank you, Anne for contributing to the conversation. We hope that the illustration is widely shared and discussed as much as possible in the coming weeks.
