5 Times Anna Paquin’s Views on Sexuality Were Absolutely Beautiful
Anna Paquin has been a personal hero of mine since she portrayed a lonely little girl in Fly Away Home, so when she posted a very personal tweet in support of marriage equality the other day, my heart soared. The True Blood actress, who is married to costar Stephen Moyer, tweeted for LGBT Pride Month, “Proud to be a happily married bisexual mother. Marriage is about love not gender. @eqca @NOH8Campaign @ItGetsBetter.”
The more celebrities get on board with this movement, the more awareness we’ll have on such an important issue. Paquin has discussed sexuality many times before—here are four more instances when she stood for equality and made us all proud by doing so.
1. On bisexuality skepticism
Many argue bisexuality doesn’t really exist and that humans can only love in black and white, but Paquin challenged this notion in a 2010 interview, “I’m not someone who endlessly talks about her personal life for no reason, but obviously, as someone who identifies as bisexual, those are issues I really care about . . . for me, it’s not really an issue because I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing. It’s not made up. It’s not a lack of decision.”
2. On attraction
Two years later, Paquin did another interview in which she explained that gender isn’t what draws her to another person. People are drawn to each other and gender is irrelevant, “I’m sure for some people saying they’re bisexual feels less scary than making a statement that they’re gay. My sexuality is not made up, for a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor to who they’re attracted to.”
3. On the stigma the bisexuality community faces
“Frankly, no one had ever asked me before [whether I was bisexual]. There is a lot of prejudice against us but the more people talk about it, the less of a deal it will be,” she said in 2011. “Who people choose to sleep with – or spend their lives with-shouldn’t matter, not that anyone particularly cares who I’m attracted to.”
4. On not caring about what others think
“I’m Anna Paquin. I’m bisexual and I give a damn,” she said in her 2010 coming out PSA.
