Anna Kendrick nixed a love interest in “Pitch Perfect 3” for a ridiculously smart reason
When Pitch Perfect 3 hits theaters on Friday, it’ll be full of stunning performances, aca-amazing female friendships, and our favorite a cappella group getting into some serious shenanigans. But one thing the film won’t have is problematic storylines, all thanks to Anna Kendrick.
Despite being a wildly popular film series centered around a group of incredible (and talented) women, it seems executives still had a couple very problematic requests for third film — something star Anna Kendrick quickly shut down.
The actress recently revealed to Harper’s Bazaar UK that her character, Beca, was initially supposed to have a love interest in the film, music executive Theo (played by Guy Burnet), who in the film is working to recruit Beca as a solo artist to open for DJ Khaled. But Kendrick quickly nixed the storyline as she didn’t think it was appropriate for Beca’s love interest to be someone she was already in a working relationship with.
She revealed, “Originally the music executive was supposed by my romantic interest but I said no to that, because I thought that would be kind of fucking problematic.”
She added that executives pushed for at least a kiss at the end of the film — which she also said no to, for obvious reasons.
"I was like, 'Can no one else [see it]? Once I said it, everybody was like, 'I guess so,'" Kendrick said. "And they still wanted to have a version at the end when we kissed, and I still said no."
Considering Pitch Perfect 3 is reportedly all about the Barden Bellas’ final performances and their enduring friendship, it seems kind of ridiculous that Beca would need a love interest.
But Beca’s love interest isn’t the only outrageous request Kendrick had to combat. The actress also revealed that Pitch Perfect 3 executives wanted “sexier” and more revealing clothing for the film, a request she found to be completely ridiculous.
"It's funny — whenever we do the wardrobe fittings I feel like we get notes from the top saying they should be tighter and sexier and show more skin," she said, "and I'm like, that's not why people are coming to see the movie. They definitely aren't showing up because of our sex appeal."
We’re glad Anna stood her ground regarding wardrobe and unnecessary storylines because Pitch Perfect 3 should be an ode to the Bellas. Plus, Beca and Jesse forever. Pitch Perfect 3 opens in theaters everywhere on December 22nd.
