Ann Louise Sullivan is our Illustrator of the Week!

We go way back with Ann Louise Sullivan — the self-described doodler, card designer, and font enthusiast was responsible for our Weekend Tweet Treats column in 2013, and we’ve been in love with her work ever since. Master of the minimalist (often combined with some all-too-relatable text), Ann’s work is just as fun when she’s using color as when she’s keeping it simple with black and white. Her style is totally distinct, and we’re super into it — and that’s why she’s our Illustrator of the Week!

No pressure, but describe your art: Fun and colorful, where silly meets clever — all around lighthearted, accessible images with the ultimate goal of making people smile!

What inspires you to make things: It’s my desire to bring to life the seemingly infinite amount of ideas bouncing around my head.

Your favorite thing(s) to draw: Girly things, duh! Patterns get me extremely excited. Another constant theme is illustrating humorous anecdotes.

Medium of choice: Call me old-fashioned, but ink and colored pencil.

The first time you knew you wanted to be an artist: There’s no profound answer here. It just kind of always “was” with me. But I think everyone is an artist in his or her own way, some just explore it.

Proudest achievement so far: Designing Rebecca Minkoff’s 2014 Mother’s Day card.

Music you listen to while you work: Lana Del Rey and Brett (formerly The Dance Party) are forever staples. Then, usually something upbeat, and certainly a splash of Songza’s Blogged 200.

Your most prized possession: My memory! I have a sci-fi-esque memory.

Your personal hero: Cheesy, but true: my mom. She’s the most resilient person I know, extremely resourceful, derives happiness from within — a simple creature always able to find joy in the little things. But, Mom aside, I admire strong, confident, motivated ladies who embrace their weaknesses and aren’t afraid to own every inch of themselves (à la Mindy Kaling).

The last thing to make you giggle: I told my mom “my Internet hookup” was this Thursday, “hopefully between eleven and noon.” She thought I was talking about meeting a boy from the Internet (. . . I was getting Internet installed in my apartment).

Current project(s): I’m new to Austin and working to establish a physical presence for my work here.
