How Many Funny People Can You Fit Into An ‘Angry Birds’ Movie? A Lot
The original addictive smartphone game is going from the small screen to the big one: an Angry Birds movie is a thing that is happening! In ridiculously exciting, comedy dream-team news, Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and Danny McBride have signed on as the main creatures of the much-anticipated film, rumored for release on July 1, 2016, and we’re fangirling out.
News about the film and cast were announced after Angry Birds users reached one billion slingshots yesterday, which is an incredible feat for the game and speaks to its epic worldwide engagement. According to Variety, Sudeikis will play Red, the HBIC (aka Head Bird In Charge), Hader will be a pig, Rudolph will be a character named Matilda, Dinklage will be the Mighty Eagle, Gad will be Chuck, and McBride will be the Bomb. As if the aforementioned stars weren’t enough, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Hannibal Buress, Ike Barinholtz, Keegan-Michael Key, Cristela Alonzo, Jillian Bell, Danielle Brooks, Latin musician Romeo Santos, and YouTube superstars Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla) will also be featured in the film. I’d repeat the list for emphasis but, as you can tell, it is much too vast and glorious.
The Columbia Pictures and Rovio animated feature will be directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis and written by Jon Vitti and is destined for hilarity. I’ve personally never given much thought to the backstory and emotional motivation behind slingshotting birds at pigs (aside from the fact that the birds are, you know, angry), but the just-announced cast is unbeatable and the movie is guaranteed to be filled with giggles.
