ICYMI: Angelina Jolie’s kickass Kids’ Choice Awards speech was everything
Days after inspiring op-ed in the New York Times in which she revealed that she had preventative surgery to reduce her risk of ovarian cancer, Angelina Jolie delivered an inspirational message to a whole other audience at Nickelodeon’s 28th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards.
It was Jolie’s first public appearance since her op-ed was published last week, and she attended the awards show with two of her children, Shiloh and Zahara, who were super-psyched (in the MOST adorable way) when she won the favorite villain award for her work in Maleficent.
I mean, let’s just bask in this moment for a sec.
So after a lot of hugs from her biggest supporters, Jolie gets to the podium, accepts her award, and goes on to give the most inspiring speech quite possibly ever delivered at the show.
She begins: “When I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different. And I felt out of place: too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in.”
“And, then one day I realized something, something that I hope you all realize: Different is good,” she continues. “So, don’t fit in. Don’t sit still. Don’t ever try to do less than you are. When somebody tells you you’re different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud.”
Then she ended on this perfect note: “And as you’re villain, I would also say — cause a little trouble. It’s good for you.”
It’s a lovely, simple message but it’s also good advice: Being different is powerful and something, ultimately, to be proud of. We’re so down with that.
