Angelina and Brad’s new movie is set in ’70s France and looks mesmerizing
It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 10 years since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie appeared in a film together. 10 years! In that time, they’ve experienced a lot of life’s ups and downs – expanding their family, pursuing new projects (Angie’s foray into directing, Brad’ s post-Katrina charity work, the creation of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation), and the reveals of Angelina’s preventative surgeries after discovering she had a risk of developing cancer.
Through it all, these two have proven they’re an indomitable couple in Hollywood — and now they’re finally reuniting on the big screen. It was recently announced that their latest collaboration, By the Sea, is officially getting a release date of November 13, 2015. Know that means? It’s probably going to be an awards season contender, as fall release dates often signal big investments for studios.
The film takes place in 1970s France, and was not only directed by Jolie — but written and produced by the female powerhouse, as well. By the Sea stars the two most famous people ever as a couple drifting apart from one another, and the film stills already released are pretty telling of how this is going to play out on screen.
Brad plays an American writer, Angelina a retired dancer. When they stumble upon a small town in the midst of their vacation, they find themselves drawn in. It was filmed on a private island in Malta, and it looks like it’s going to be the perfect story to reunite this real-life pair of marrieds.
Why 1970s France? In a statement made to Entertainment Weekly, that was a choice deliberately made by Angelina herself. “It removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey,” she said.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, this is definitely going to be a different experience from their previous film together, Mr. and Mrs. Smith — which was an action ride from start to finish. By the Sea looks like it’ll be a much more emotional movie, but there’s nothing wrong with switching it up a bit, and these two have the skills to make anything pretty awesome. We’re more than ready for this to drop on November 13.
