Angelina and Brad have couple problems, just like everyone else
Here’s some very good news for love: even mythically glamorous couples like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have to work through problems. Maybe the only major difference is that Bradgelina has to work out their relationship kinks while on a movie set on the exotic island of Malta, whereas ours might pop up in aisle three of Wal-Mart. Still counts, though.
Angelina recently spoke to The Telegraph about her latest movie, By the Sea, in which she wrote, produced, directed, and co-starred, alongside her hubby. The pair decided to film during their honeymoon last year, hoping to have as much fun as they did working on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where they met ten years ago. But the material was so different and so dark that the process proved to be more of a challenge. “We thought, maybe By the Sea was going to be that kind of fun [we had on Mr. and Mrs. Smith], but realized very quickly that it wasn’t,” she shared. “Then we joked that this is what happens after 10 years of marriage.”
By the Sea tells the story of a former dancer and her alcoholic novelist husband who settle in a ‘70s French beach town to work through their separate depressions. Forced to see themselves through the eyes of local residents, they realize they must resolve issues within their marriage. Judging by the trailer, which shows both Angelina and Brad turning on the waterworks, I wouldn’t call By the Sea a follow up to Mr. and Mrs. Smith whatsoever.
Angelina admitted that though filming the European art inspired feature wasn’t a barrel of laughs, she and Brad grew together as artists and as husband and wife. “We made a private pact that we were going to try to be as open and honest and emotive as possible,” she said, “and give to each other as much as we could and, succeed or fail, we would just lay it bare.”
Directing Brad could be challenging at times because he knows Angelina so well (awww) – if she was unsatisfied with a take, he could tell before she started giving notes. Angelina attributed their decade-long relationship to the ultimate success of the shoot. She said that if they had tried to make this movie when their love was new, “it would have been a disaster.”
Critics are already picking apart By the Sea in hopes of uncovering secret marital problems between one of the world’s most high-profile couples. Angelina is putting her foot down, and clarified that this movie is in no way a reflection of their real life together. “To be clear,” she said, “we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space, but the problems in the movie aren’t our specific problems.”
