Amy Smart revealed that she had her baby through a surrogate, and here’s why that’s important
Fertility issues are a widely experienced — but seldom discussed — part of life. All too often women are ashamed or embarrassed to speak up about an issue that, in reality, affects so many people. Which means we’re always so glad when women choose to share their stories.
Actress Amy Smart revealed she had a baby via surrogate, and it’s great that she’s sharing her story for other mothers and families who may be considering this option.
Smart and her husband Carter Oosterhouse had apparently been trying to conceive for quite a while, and they decided upon using a surrogate. Their beautiful daughter Flora was born this past December.
"One month ago today, Dec. 26th our amazing beautiful daughter came into this world. Feeling so grateful to have her in my arms...after years of fertility struggles I give thanks today to our kind, loving surrogate for carrying her."
Their family is absolutely adorable, and glowing with happiness.
Unfortunately, there can sometimes still be a certain stigma around surrogacy, but it’s so often because people have not had exposure to it in any significant way. So the more open dialogues we have about it, the faster misconceptions will get dispelled.
And the sharing is well on its way; Lucy Liu addressed criticism over using a surrogate last year, and Kim Kardashian is considering surrogacy for her third child. Of course she has questions like any mother would, and she’s finding answers through thorough research. We’re so glad that Smart joined these women in starting a conversation about surrogacy, and that she presented it in such a matter-of-fact way.
If you are considering this option, know that there are many women out there who have used one. Don’t hesitate to use message boards and forums for support and to arm yourself with information.
