Amy Schumer’s scary encounter with a fan made her set new selfie boundaries

When you see your favorite celebrity in real life, it can be tempting to freak out, run up to them and snap a selfie before they know what hits them. Because what are the chances of spotting them out in the wild? But remember: Celebrities are people, going about their days, just like us.

Yesterday, Amy Schumer had an unfortunate fan encounter that left her feeling violated and frustrated. A stranger on the street came running up to her and insisted it was her duty to pose for a photo with him.

“This guy in front of his family just ran up next to me scared the shit out of me. Put a camera in my face,” Amy wrote in a post on Instagram. “I asked him to stop and he said ‘no it’s America and we paid for you.’”

Amy went on to say that because of this encounter, she won’t stop to take pictures with fans anymore. “I was saying stop and no,” she continued. If she said “no,” celebrity or not, the man should have stopped and left her alone. Period.

Later, after she cooled down from the incident, Amy changed her mind. She posted this on Twitter to explain her new stance on taking photos with fans.

“I’ll still take pictures with nice people when I choose to if it’s a good time for that,” she posted later on Twitter. “But I don’t owe you anything. So don’t take if I say no.”

The next time you see a celeb, think twice about how you proceed. Playing paparazzi can be okay in some settings, but famous people don’t owe us photo opps just because they’re famous. Let’s leave it up to Amy — and the rest of the celebs — to decide if they want to take selfies with us.
