Amy Schumer gets real about internet trolls (and writes a hilarious sketch about it)

It’s hard to imagine that any sane person wouldn’t love Amy Schumer. She’s intelligent, honest, and (kind of most importantly given that she’s a professional funny person) funny as hell.

Which is why it boils our blood to hear that she’s had to take some pretty insane internet trolling and bullying over the years. In a recent interview with the LA Times, Schumer opens up about it, specifically talking about Leslie Jones’ recent experience with internet toxicity.

“It was just so much hate at once. And you feel like it’s never-ending and it is the truth. She [Leslie] was not used to it. I’ve had 10 years of people sending a lot of vitriol and it’s been spread out. For her, it hit like a ton of bricks. I told her, “You’re going to come back and be like, ‘… you.’ And it’s going to make you stronger.”

She went on to say, “I remember how it feels. It feels like your new reality, like your biggest fear has come true. And then once they’ve come true, you have nothing to be scared of […] It took Leslie Jones to get [Twitter] to realize that people are banding together in a violent and dangerous way. And, you know, we can uphold our First Amendment and still protect people in a way that isn’t careless. I was really happy to see that.”

Not just one for talking, Schumer wrote a sketch specifically addressing all the anonymous hate thrown at women online.  The premise? That Twitter added a new shortcut — an, “I’m going to rape and kill you” button.
