Amy Schumer’s One Direction parody sparks awesome makeup-free movement
The most recent episode of Inside Amy Schumer was, of course, perfection — especially the segment where she spoofed a One Direction song. The faux 1D video was called “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup!” and it was super-empowering, until suddenly it wasn’t. You know all those IRL song lyrics that are like, (real 1D song lyric alert), “Don’t need makeup to cover up, being the way that you are is enough”? Well, Schumer takes off her makeup and then, in the spoof song, they tell her to put the makeup back on. Sigh. It was funny, spot-on, and spoke to society’s problematic beauty standards in the most hilarious way. Couching it as a music video was also genius. It even sparked some positive social media momentum.
Schumer obviously knew what she was doing. She kicked things off with this tweet.
After the episode, women around the world started posting truly empowering make-up-free selfies with the hashtag #girlyoudontneedmakeup.
As usual, Amy reminds us that we don’t need to take ourselves so seriously and that we are all beautiful, with or without makeup! Way to make us laugh and spark a positive social media campaign in one fell swoop, Schums.
Video watching time.
