Amy Schumer just taught a fan a very valuable lesson about sexist “jokes”

Sometimes, people make cruel jokes just to be spiteful or mean. But when 17-year-old film critic Jackson Murphy, who runs the site Lights Camera Jackson, made a sexist joke about Amy Schumer, Amy didn’t get angry — she just calmly taught him a lesson in what not to say to women, regardless of their own personal stand-up routines.

At the Critics’ Choice Awards, Jackson posted a photo on Twitter with the comedian. “Spent the night with @amyschumer. Certainly not the first guy to write that,” he wrote in his tweet, which has since been deleted.

Amy responded with a bit of her typical sarcasm, but clearly knew that he didn’t mean it to hurt her, so she made it a teaching lesson instead. “I get it. Cause I’m a whore?” she tweeted back. “Glad I took a photo with you. Hi to your dad.”

Jackson quickly realized his mistake and tweeted back, “I truly apologize. Thought you’d like the joke. I should leave the comedy to you!”

And then she responded assuring him it’s fine, but still included a gentle reminder:

Of course, Amy jokes often in her stand-up routines about her sex life, and she often is self-deprecating about her own activities in the bedroom. But that doesn’t give anyone else the license to joke about her sex life. That’s slut-shaming, and it’s 100% not OK.

Yes, it might seem a little bit severe to respond to a 17-year-old on a public forum, but Amy used this as a teaching moment, and Jackson clearly learned from it — he immediately apologized, which we totally commend him for. We just wish all awkward jokes would be respectfully handled this way.
