You MUST see this video of Amy Schumer at her first ever stand-up set in 2003 because it’s adorable

Amy Schumer has become such a regular household name it’s hard to remember when she wasn’t. Everybody knows who she is, everyone has heard at least some of her jokes. But we’re guessing that not many people know much about her, and how she got her start.

Born in Manhattan and raised on Long Island, she studied theatre at Towson University in Maryland. She started trying out stand-up shortly after graduating, and took the stage for the first time at Manhattan’s Gotham Comedy Club in 2003.

Amy Schumer posted a clip from that first-ever gig on Instagram, and it’s pretty golden.

Though she dubs the performance as “brutal,” we hear the strength and confidence in her voice. Stand-up was definitely this woman’s medium.

Five years later, she’d record a Live at Gotham episode for Comedy Central. That alone shows the upward trajectory of Schumer’s career.

But that same year, she landed on the cast of Last Comic Standing, after having already auditioned and been turned down for an earlier season.

She placed fourth on the show, which led to a couple of years of advertising campaigns and late night appearances. Then, in 2010, she appeared in her first Comedy Central Presents special. And the rest is history. It was a fast surge from there to her current megastar status.

And now she plays sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden.

…which seats 20,789 people, btw. NBD.
