Amy Schumer gets real about a past abusive relationship

When we talk about Amy Schumer, it’s usually in the context of something hilarious she said or did, but that definitely doesn’t mean she ever shies away from opening up about more serious issues, like her first time having sex or her struggles with body image.

And in her new memoir, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Schumer opens up about a relationship she had with a guy who physically and verbally abusive.

Schumer says that the guy, who she calls, “Dan,” once pushed her into the hood of a parked car, where she hit her head and elbow, and he once even chased her with a weapon. “I was screaming for him to stop, when he grabbed a butcher knife from a drawer. And that’s when I was sure he was going to kill me. It may sound cliche, but I saw my life flash before my eyes.”

This is a horrifying reminder that abusive relationships can happen to anyone. But we’re so glad that Schumer decided to share this scary part of her past, because all too often victims of abuse suffer in silence.

As Schumer says in no uncertain terms, “You’re not alone if it’s happening to you, and you’re not exempt if it hasn’t happened to you yet.” Meaning, we should all be vigilant as we move through life and meet new people — especially when we enter into new relationships.
