Amy Schumer just said some awesome things about gender roles in ‘Trainwreck’

Amy Schumer just keeps on giving us reasons to love her. Like when she told The Daily Beast the other day that she turned down the opportunity to host The Daily Show because, although it’s a great honor, it’s not something she wants to do, and she has “never done anything safe or to make money for that reason.” You go, girl! Although we would have LOVED to see Amy host, we love that she’s going after what she truly wants to do and is thus encouraging others to do the same.

Now, she’s spoken out about gender roles in her new film, Trainwreck, which hits theaters July 17. And she has some seriously amazing things to say. At a press conference for the film on Friday in Los Angeles, Amy proved, once again, that she is certainly not afraid to share what’s on her mind.

In the film, Amy will be playing, well, Amy, a woman who does not believe in monogamy and dates around. Many believe this is just a woman acting like a man — but Amy, who wrote the screenplay for the film, was quick to dispel the idea that flipping gender was her intent. “A lot of people have asked me if I intended to kind of flip the gender roles like I’m playing the guy, and that’s not been my experience at all,” she explained at the press conference, according to People.”This is how I am, and how a lot of girls are, where the guy ends up being a little more sensitive and more invested.”

In fact, there are some moments in the film that actually happened in Amy’s life – such as “the scene where I get high and then John [Cena’s] character looks through my phone, and then instead of comforting him I ask if I can leave – that did happen in my real life,” she said, according to People. Yes, ladies and gentlemen: Women can date around, too, and they’re not always *deeply* invested in every single man they happen to date. She’s actually depicting the reality of thousands of independent women all over the world who don’t necessarily need a man to feel validated.

And when it comes to her body image, she once again has a refreshing view: she loves her body, just how it is. In fact, filming the movie was quite cathartic for her. “It’s very therapeutic for me to be like, ‘Yes, I’m not going to look like a malnourished bird,’ and I like speaking to that, as well as speaking to my work and what I’m doing,” she told reporters at the press conference. It’s great to be naturally thin, but actresses shouldn’t have to force themselves into a body type that’s not natural for them just to snag a role – and that’s exactly what Amy believes.
