So, of course Amy Schumer was approached about hosting ‘The Daily Show’ — here’s why she turned it down

Before the end of Summer — August 6th, to be exact — Jon Stewart is stepping down from his hosting gig at The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He’s handing the show over to new host (and semi-newcomer), Trevor Noah. We’ve known about Stewart’s exit, and Noah’s replacement, for a while now, but over the last few months we’ve heard a little bit more about who else was approached for the position. We’ve also learned about why these others turned it down. One name we’re just hearing about now is no surprise whatsoever: Amy Schumer was considered to host The Daily Show.

Collective squeal of excitement, and then collective sigh, because as we know, a Schumer-hosted Daily Show is just too perfect for this world.

Schumer explains to The Daily Beast that she was “honored to be asked and considered.” She’s already got her own show on Comedy Central, as if in the last 30 seconds you’ve completely forgotten about how much you love Inside Amy Schumer. So being asked to host The Daily Show, according to Schumer, was a huge vote of confidence from her “parents.”

“I project so much ‘You’re my parents!’ on the network and the people that run it, so them saying, ‘We believe in you and trust that you can do this,’ I thought, ‘Oh my god, thank you!’” You probably just read this sentence, in your head, in Schumer’s excited voice.

While clearly this is a huge deal, and we know Schumer could have done amazing things with The Daily Show, she ultimately turned it down. Continuing, she says, “Then I thought, ‘Well, I could give everyone I love a job and we could all be together for five years. But picturing being in a building and knowing what I was going to do for five years—I love not knowing. And I’ve never done anything safe or to make money for that reason. So, you know, I said, ‘I can’t start now.’”

It makes sense. Schumer is already doing amazing (great, magnificent, hilarious, etc.) things with Inside Amy Schumer, and she’s got a movie opening soon, too: Trainwreck. Not being tied down to Daily Show means she has the opportunity to continue exploring more TV and film opportunities, and for us, that’s a great thing.

So while we’ll never get a glimpse at a Schumer-led Daily Show, we can hopefully hold out for a 6-minute version of it to wind up on Inside. That’s the next best thing.
