Even Amy Schumer struggles with body image — here’s how she found confidence through fashion
Amy Schumer isn’t afraid to get real about her body. She’s constantly cracking jokes about her weight and the ridiculously high expectations the entertainment industry has for women. Yes, they’re jokes based on experiences she’s struggled with in real life, but Amy is able to laugh them off, because she’s found confidence and empowerment—through fashion and the way she dresses. Now, she hopes to bring that same knowledge and confidence to a younger generation of women.
“It’s been a struggle for me my whole life,” Amy said to Maria Shriver in a segment on TODAY. “Especially just being in the entertainment industry. Standing on a stage in front of people, I can’t perform my best or be confident if I’m not sure… If I’m pulling at something [that I’m wearing]. Sometimes I would just want to throw in the towel and be like, ‘I’m not gonna go do standup tonight.’”
Amy wants a younger generation to understand how to be empowered through fashion. How to dress to feel good about yourself. How to give yourself the right tools to succeed. To do so, she’s partnered with Goodwill for style empowerment workshops designed to educate, inspire and transform women — all with fashion.
Amy recalls times in the past when she felt smart, sexy and confident—only to have that positive energy shatter when she went to get dressed. That is, until she met stylist Leesa Evans on the set of Trainwreck. Evans taught her how to dress and feel empowered with good fashion choices. Amy got teary talking about just how much the stylist has impacted her outlook on life.
“To know that I’ve helped someone feel more confident in their life — I can’t think of anything better, truthfully,” said Evans. Amen! There’s nothing better than being comfortable being you, in your own skin.
Here’s the entire segment, where the two women discuss the subject more in depth. Warning: Things get pretty emotional.
