Amy Poehler sang Bette Midler’s ‘The Rose’ and it was just gorgeous
Is there anything Amy Poehler can’t do?!
She writes books that inspire us, performs in movies and comedy sketches that have us unable to breathe from laughing —and now she can add being a powerhouse singer to that list.
On Saturday night, Poehler surprised the crowd in attendance at Festival Supreme, coming up on-stage during a set with Jack Black’s band to perform her very own rendition of “The Rose,” the song made famous by Bette Midler.
Channeling Janis Joplin to the extreme — in dark shades, a long coat and with a cigarette dangling from her fingers — she immediately has the audience enraptured, with everyone holding up hands and candles alike to sway.
Apparently, this was also just as moving a moment for Poehler herself — who admitted not-too-long ago that she’s always had a small amount of hero worship for The Divine Miss M. Actually, they’re pretty much besties, if only in Poehler’s head.
“I first met Bette Midler in my head when I watched the film The Rose in 1979,” she told Vulture. “And since then, her and I have been best friends, in my head. In my head, she and I travel together, we have cut an album, and we pranked George Clooney. She’s the godmother to the children of mine that she has never met, and once, Bette turned to me in a dream and said, ‘Amy, you are the most talented person I’ve ever met. I hate to say this, this kills me, but you’re more talented than me. God bless you and I release you to God,’ and then she turned into a million doves and flew away.”
Well, after this? We’re pretty positive that Bette Midler is going to be picking up the phone to coordinate a BFF hangout in the near future. Check out the video of Poehler killing it below:
