An American version of Hogwarts? All of the yes!
Have you convinced yourself that the only reason you never got a Hogwarts letter is because you weren’t living in Europe at age 11? It’s what we’ve got to deal with every day, my friends, but now J.K. Rowling is hinting that there might be a Wizarding school closer to home. As in, America. As in, pack your bags, we have a school to find.
Rowling is hard at work writing Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the companion prequel to Harry Potter. The events will be set in the United States, and it’s been confirmed that some of the action will take place in New York City. While we don’t know what magizoologist Newt Scamander is doing in NYC, let alone the USA, Rowling answered some questions via Twitter about where he might go in the movie. Specifically, if he finds his way to any American Wizarding school.
It all started with a simple exchange and a question about the Salem’s Witches Institute (note: Rowling says it’s a joke, but it’s just the name that’s a joke. In her HP world, it’s like a Ladies Club, and some of the members of the SWI attended the Quidditch World Cup in 1994).
Then, everyone freaked over the idea of Newt visiting a magical school in NYC.
THEN, she confirmed for all Muggles that YES, there’s a Wizarding school in America, and YES, we’ll hear about it in Fantastic Beasts, but NO, she can’t tell us its name because some things have to remain a secret for now.
This is amazing amazing amazing. Haven’t you always wondered about wizards in America? Supposedly there’s a Brazilian wizarding school, too, but there’s aren’t too many Rowling hints about that one. We’ve gotta ask her about that soon.
Fantastic Beasts is nicely shaping up to be one of the best movies ever made. Even though it won’t feature Harry and friends, it’s certainly stacking up magical elements to wow us. How soon until it’s released? Oh, yeah, November 16, 2016. Hopefully, my American Wizarding School acceptance letter arrives before then.
