America Ferrera and Natalie Portman were each other’s dates to the Golden Globes

The 2018 Golden Globes are proving to be all about solidarity with women. One of our favorite moments of the Golden Globes’ red carpet so far has to be watching actresses Natalie Portman and America Ferrera step onto the red carpet as each other’s dates. (Some people have girls’ nights at home in front of the TV, some people have girls’ nights during one of the biggest awards shows of the year.)

Of course, Portman and Ferrera — both proud feminists activists — are two of the many attendees who wore all black ensembles to the show in support of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, both of which shine a light on women’s rights and sexual misconduct in the workplace.

While on the red carpet, the two actresses discussed the power of seeing so many women accompany each other to the awards show (Michelle Williams was joined by Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement, for example).

In an Instagram video posted earlier today, America explained her stance on wearing all black, saying, “I wear black because I believe that every woman everywhere has a voice, has power and deserves to live with safety and with dignity. So join me, join us, wear black wherever you are… wear your black PJs, wear your black onesies, wear your black gowns, and stand with us to say that time is up. And if you have the means, give to the Legal Defense Fund whatever is possible for you. We’ve already raised almost 16 million dollars through our GoFundMe campaign, so thank you sisters and our male allies for standing in solidarity to say time is up.”

Natalie posted her own video as well, explaining her reasons for wearing black:

While speaking on vital issues around gender equality, the two are also clearly having a really great time being each other’s dates. The prom-esque photo posted on America’s Instagram was just the beginning; her Instagram Story included a hilarious video of her and Natalie maneuvering the app (Natalie’s brand new to Instagram). false

It’s so nice to see women coming together in more ways than one during this awards season.
