We’re fascinated by Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s bizarre apology video

Today, Amber Heard appeared in court in Queensland, Australia for failing to declare her dogs, Pistol and Boo, after landing in the county last April. And this weekend, she and husband Johnny Depp released a bizarre apology video that is leaving folks on the Internet scratching their heads.

“Australia’s a wonderful island, with a treasure trove of unique plants, animals, and people. . . [the country] is free of many pests and diseases that are commonplace around the world,” Amber said in the video, while sitting next to Johnny. “That is why Australia has to have such strong biosecurity laws. . . I am truly sorry that Pistol and Boo were not declared. Protecting Australia is important.”

According to Australian law, pets are required to be placed in quarantine and declared before entering the country. (These are the rules for traveling with pets in many countries.) But Amber flew her Yorkshire terriers in the country on a private jet without fulfilling either of these requirements, meaning that she illegally smuggled in her dogs. The The Rum Diary actress also provided false information on her incoming passenger card. When Australia’s Department of Agriculture discovered their pooches, Amber faced a two-year jail term and a fine of $15,350. These charges were ultimately dropped, and Amber pleaded guilty, agreeing to a one-month good behavior bond.

“[Australia] has to be protected,” Johnny added. “And Australians are just as unique, both warm and direct. When you disrespect Australian law, they will tell you firmly. . . Declare everything when you enter Australia.”

While the sentiment is quite true indeed, many felt that the tone of the video was a bit . . . how do we say it? . . . awkward:

“Ms. Heard also offered to publicly state her contrition with the support of her husband – this video is that statement,” writes the Department of Agriculture on YouTube.

Well, hey, at least Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have used their public platform to publicly talk about breakin’ the rules — even if through a strange medium.
