What you need to know about Amazon’s new version of Etsy

Amazing news for people who love handmade things, crafts, and are totally addicted to Etsy. Amazon has just announced that they’re launching their own version of Etsy, so start saying goodbye to your paychecks. We’re going to need to buy EVERYTHING.

Handmade at Amazon is here to introduce us to “artisan-created jewelry and home products.” According to Peter Faricy, VP for Amazon Marketplace, Amazon has “designed a custom shopping experience for customers looking for handmade items by bringing together many of the best artisans in the world, and they’re adding thousands of items daily.” Basically, it’s just like Etsy, but now you can buy ALL THE THINGS and use Amazon Prime and get it shipped to you in two days time. Because yes, many items in Handmade are Prime eligible, and my shopping cart is already bursting at the seams.

There are also ways for you to filter your items according to region or country. So if you’re looking for products strictly from the Midwest, or if you only want necklaces from Bulgaria, there’s a way to refine your search accordingly.

According to the New York Times, roughly “80,000 items from about 5,000 sellers in 60 countries,” are available through Handmade. That’s a lot of items. Each item also links back to the Seller’s page, providing a picture and a little blurb about them. Customers know exactly where their items are coming from, and who’s selling them — and if they’re not Prime eligible, you’ll learn how long the product takes to make, and its anticipated ship date.

There are currently six categories to shop under — home, jewelry, artwork, stationery and party supplies, kitchen and dining, and baby — and they’ll grow and get more specific from there.

It also appears as if the artisans selling on Amazon have all been hand-picked for the site based on their work. Not anyone can just sign up and start selling. This means we are going to get the best products from some of the best craftsmen (and craftswomen) around the world. One-click shopping has never been so dangerous.

Amazon released a quick little promo video for the site, to get us even more excited. So watch, enjoy, shop, and patiently wait by your mailbox for everything to arrive.
