Amazon is making Prime memberships more affordable for low-income families

We didn’t think Amazon Prime could get any better, but the company just proved us wrong. Amazon is making Prime memberships more affordable for low-income families, because everyone deserves the luxury of never leaving the house to shop.

Prime normally costs $10.99 a month, which is around $132 a year, or $99 a year if paid annually. But families who use Electronic Benefits Transfer cards (EBT), are being offered Prime benefits for the discounted price of $5.99.

So now more families who need it will be able to use the perks of Prime.

An EBT card is used to disburse funds for many government assistance programs including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program (WIC). Families won’t be able to use EBT for membership, but they’ll be able to qualify once a year, up to four times.

The company will eventually be adding other ways to qualify for customers who participate in government assistant programs, but don’t use an EBT card.

“We designed this membership option for customers receiving government assistance to make our everyday selection and savings more accessible, including the many conveniences and entertainment benefits of Prime," Vice President of Amazon Prime Greg Greeley said in the announcement on Tuesday.

The discount isn’t good for any Amazon products, but it’ll come with all the Prime perks, including free two-day shipping and access to Amazon Prime Video.
