Amal Clooney just launched an education scholarship for young Lebanese women
Amal Clooney is a very impressive human being. Along with being one of the world’s most renowned human rights lawyers, she’s also an activist and notable author with a list of publications any writer would be envious of. Often praised for both her impeccable sense of style and whip smart approach to global politics, the fact that she’s married to Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney seems like a mere footnote in her life. Simply put, Amal Clooney is pretty amazing.
But just in case you aren’t convinced of her flawlessness, in her spare time, Clooney is also extremely involved in social work — and her latest venture takes her dedication to a new level. According to the Huffington Post, Clooney has officially partnered with nonprofit organization 100 Lives to create a scholarship supporting young Lebanese women by helping pay for their education. Every year, the “Amal Clooney Scholarship” will send one lucky young woman to Armenia’s United World College in Dilijan for a two-year international baccalaureate program.
“This scholarship will give young women from Lebanon the opportunity of a lifetime,” Clooney said in a statement. “Cross-cultural learning and studying abroad can be transformative.”
Clooney herself was born in Lebanon, and is living proof that a love of education can lead to incredible things. On the other hand, 100 Lives aims “to celebrate those who helped Armenians in need one hundred years ago [during the Armenian Genocide] and to continue in their spirit by supporting people and organizations that keep the legacy of gratitude alive.” The partnership makes perfect sense.
The first year’s winner has already been picked — and from what we can tell, she’s more than deserving of the honor. According to Fortune, Pamela Tebchrany graduated top of her class and is fluent in Arabic, English, and French. And Tebchrany isn’t the only person who will benefit from the Clooney family this year: Reportedly, Clooney’s husband is co-chair for the nonprofit’s Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, a $1 million grant “that will be given annually to people who put themselves at risk to enable others to survive.” Clearly, both are dedicated to making a difference — and Amal Clooney’s new scholarship is only the tip of the iceberg.
“As a leading human rights barrister and campaigner, Amal Clooney is an inspirational role model for young women around the world,” 100 Lives co-founder Ruben Vardanyan said in a statement. “She exemplifies integrity, compassion and dedication — and typifies what it means to be a global citizen across all cultures.”
