Sam Smith’s Bond theme song has arrived in all its Bond glory

After months of speculation and weeks of anticipation, the 24th Bond theme song has finally arrived, courtesy of Sam Smith. The British crooner shared his latest installment, “Writing’s On The Wall,” on Twitter this morning:

The tune opens with soaring orchestral strings which seamlessly dip into a deep piano ballad. As per usual, Sam’s voice sounds absolutely flawless over the dramatic instrumental. Not to mention, that falsetto of his is enough to send chills down your spine.

While Smith might’ve joked about “being Bond” on Instagram a few weeks ago, he took the role of Bond a bit more seriously in the studio. “I tried to put myself in the shoes of Bond,” he told NPR this morning. “My music is a diary and it’s a recap of my life, and I wanted to bring that kind of honesty. In the lyrics … I wanted a touch of vulnerability from Bond, where you see into his heart a little bit.”

Sam, who co-wrote the song with longtime collaborator Jimmy Napes, is the first British male solo artist to record the Bond theme song in 50 years. Fellow Brit Adele swooped up Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe nominations for the last Bond theme song, “Skyfall.” And while Sam may have some big shoes to fill, “Writing’s On The Wall” is already shaping up to be a massive success. I mean, it just hit number one on iTunes.

Spectre hits theaters November 6. In the meantime, indulge your senses with “Writing’s On The Wall,” here.
