Alyssa Milano launched the “Me Too” campaign to raise sexual assault awareness
On October 13th, many celebrities boycotted Twitter in solidarity with Rose McGowan, whose account was locked in the midst of the Harvey Weinstein allegations. After returning to the social media platform, Alyssa Milano began the “Me Too” campaign to continue the conversation and illustrate just how many women have been assaulted or harassed in their lifetimes. And so many women have come forward to be a part of it.
The message is simple — those who have been sexually harassed or assaulted should tweet out “Me Too” to show that they, too, have dealt with this issue firsthand.
Milano’s tweet got well over 14,000 likes, and also made its way over to Facebook.
It also has inspired many to open up about the specifics of their assault and harassment experience(s).
Milano made a point to address Weinstein specifically as well in a statement she released on a website she created called “Patriot Not Partisan.” In it, she noted that the one positive thing to come out of the allegations is the dialogue it has since sparked.
"I'm happy — ecstatic even — that it has opened up a dialogue around the continued sexual harassment, objectification and degradation of women," she wrote. "To the women who have suffered any form of abuse of power, I stand beside you. To the women who have come forward against a system that is designed to keep you silent, I stand in awe of you and appreciate you and your fortitude. It is not easy to disclose such experiences, especially in the public eye. Your strength will inspire others. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for fighting this battle so hopefully my daughter won't have to."
She also made a point to state that sadly, men like Weinstein exist everywhere. These incidents aren’t isolated to a single industry.
