“I, Tonya” actress Allison Janney has 7 Emmys but zero Golden Globes — will she win one on Sunday?
Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya, which follows Tonya Harding’s competitive figure skating career, is among the coveted 2018 Golden Globe nominations this year. Racking up three Golden Globe nominations, the film stars Margot Robbie (as the titular Tonya Harding), Sebastian Stan, and Emmy-winning actress Allison Janney.
Along with nominations for Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy and a Best Actress nom for Margot Robbie, Allison Janney has also been nominated for a Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her scene-stealing turn as LaVona, Tonya Harding’s mother. This brings us to our next question: How has Janney never won a Golden Globe?
As Gold Derby points out, the Mom actress is a seven-time Emmy-winner but has zero Golden Globes. Janney has been nominated for a Golden Globe five times prior to her nom for I, Tonya — the first being for her supporting role in The West Wing in 2001. Despite not winning her a Golden Globe, her stint on The West Wing still scored her four Emmy wins.
So will the 2018 Golden Globes mark Janney’s first win? It’s very possible.
According to several 2018 Golden Globes predictions, the race could be really tight between Janney and Laurie Metcalf from Greta Gerwig’s breakout film Lady Bird. Vanity Fair predicts Janney will bring home the award for Best Supporting Actress, while Screen Rant predicts it’s a definitive Laurie Metcalf win. Bottom line: Between several different predictions, it appears to be a tight lock between Janney and Metcalf.
Vanity Fair astutely pointed out the similarities between the two actresses in their nominated roles. After all, both I, Tonya and Lady Bird depict the complex relationships between mothers and daughters. Sprinkle in themes of multi-faceted, dynamic women, and it’s no wonder they make for strong award contenders.
The 2018 Golden Globe Awards airs January 7th on NBC.
