Julianne Moore came to Alicia Vikander’s defense when a man made a crass joke about her on set

In recent months, we’ve heard countless stories of people (often men) who have abused their positions of power. Of course we’re glad to see victims bravely come forward, but it’s upsetting to hear what they endured. Thankfully, we’ve also heard numerous stories of women standing up for one another, banding together, and fighting harassment of all kinds side by side. Insert Julianne Moore, who came to the defense of Alicia Vikander, as Vikander just revealed.

The Tomb Raider actress recounted a time when Julianne Moore shut down someone making offensive remarks at her expense: When Vikander and Moore were filming 2014’s Seventh Son, a “powerful man” made Vikander the subject of a crass joke. And while Vikander was uncomfortable with the remarks, she felt like she couldn’t say anything to the man (who she didn’t identify).

"I was really embarrassed, and I would have just laughed it off," Vikander told Vogue.“But Julianne turned to him and said, ‘If you ever do that again, I’m walking out of here and I’m not coming back.’ She was just, like, ‘Don’t you f—ing say that again.’ It showed me that she had the power. And that meant so much to me.

Moore stepping out on a limb like that was impactful for Alicia Vikander.

So it’s no surprise that when the Time’s Up movement was gearing up for the Golden Globes, Vikander was a proud participant to help others as Moore helped her.

"It was such a community that came together, Vikander said. “I got on the phone with Natalie [Portman], whom I’d never met, and Reese [Witherspoon]. Suddenly I felt like I made a lot of new friends."

Whether we’re making a collective statement, marching peacefully through the streets, or just standing up for friends and colleagues when a jerk gets out of line, the way that real change is going to happen is together. That in mind, it’s so encouraging to see the ways women are linking arms and supporting one another, just like Julianne Moore did for Alicia Vikander.
