Alicia Silverstone Launches Vegan-Friendly Breast Milk-Sharing Initiative
As hard as it may be to separate the two, Alicia Silverstone is not Cher Horowitz. For example: You’d never find Silverstone, an animal rights activist and mother of one, moping around feeling like a total heifer for having two bowls of Special K, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, a handful of popcorn, 5 peanut butter M&M’s and like, 3 pieces of licorice. Why not? Because Silverstone is also a hardcore vegan and those kinds of snacks don’t exactly fit into her daily diet.
After a friend and fellow vegan mother (not doubt a total Betty) began having difficulties producing enough milk for her newborn baby post-breast reduction surgery, Silverstone was made aware of a problem unique to vegan moms. When unable to properly breastfeed, it became difficult for the mothers to be sure that their breast milk substitute was coming from someone making similar dietary choices.
In order to give these mothers a place to find what they need, the 36-year-old actress decided to launch Kind Mama Milk Share, a breast milk bank-share initiative for vegan mothers. Breast milk-sharing is a relatively new program, but there are some established brands who offer vegan-friendly breast milk alternatives or soy-based milk products as well.
Sigh. Old people can be so sweet.
