Alicia Keys had some surprising things to say about “Snow White” and we are listening
Singer and proud feminist Alicia Keys is not one to shy away from speaking out. Seriously, the woman is the original Girl On Fire. (Get it?) Alicia Keys recently spoke with Net-A-Porter about her opinions on Snow White, and we have to say — we are intrigued. While her opinions might not be popular, we applaud her ability to speak out.
Alicia Keys has some issues with Disney princesses.
As she told Net-A-Porter:
“Have you watched Snow White lately? I get real funky about the classics; I don’t like [my sons] watching it. It’s totally sexist, misogynistic — she’s cleaning for seven dwarfs. There’s nothing wrong with a woman who chooses to stay at home with her family, it’s a hard-ass job, but it’s the way it’s spoken about.
While we love Disney princesses, we understand Alicia Keys’ concerns. Frankly, we’re thrilled that there are discussions about gender roles happening. Furthermore, we love that celebrities use their fame to bring these concerns to light.
Alicia Keys’ interview with Net-A-Porter is full of badass #wisdom and self-reflection. For example, she discussed her decision to no longer wear makeup for photoshoots and performances:
"When you’re first figuring yourself out, you care so much about what people think of you. It’s the worst time. You become introverted and weird because you’re second-guessing yourself; you want to be everything that other people want you to be. Then you become cloaked in this societal bull**** that’s plonked in your lap and you spend the rest of your time digging yourself out. And that’s my conclusion for life.
You go, girl! You are a role model for all of us.
