Amazing new albums we wish would automatically download to iTunes
Remember that one time when you checked your iTunes library only to find that you had 11 songs from U2? Well, Bono has officially apologized for that. In a video posted to Facebook on Tuesday, Bono blamed “a drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity [and a] dash of self-promotion” for the album’s unusual release.
A free album sounds great in theory, but copying it to every user’s library was probably not the wisest move. Although I was not personally offended by the download (I was more concerned about the limited memory space it occupied on my iPhone 4), it spurred iTunes users to question the sanctity of their musical libraries. Bottom line: There’s nothing wrong with free music when it’s wanted. Who’da thought?
As I accepted Bono’s heartfelt apology (and I think we all should), it made me wonder whether any album would fare well in the automatically downloaded to iTunes climate. Since the answer to that question was an overwhelming “no,” I have resolved to fantasizing about my own automatic downloads. . .
1. She and Him – Classics (forthcoming later this year)
True to form, Zooey and M. Ward will be paying tribute to good, old-fashioned music with their new album, Classics. The album will include 13 classic songs performed live with an orchestra. If you didn’t already know that their covers are delicious confections for your ears, this 44-second preview should give you a good idea of what’s to come.
2. Thom Yorke – Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes (2014)
Like U2, there was a great deal of hoopla surrounding the surprise release of Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. But rather than automatically downloading to our iTunes library, Thom Yorke took the other road less traveled and offered the album on BitTorrent. Getting ahold of the album has been a rather unorthodox process for most of us, but we’re willing to brave anything for his hauntingly gorgeous music.
3. Jessie Ware – Tough Love (forthcoming)
If you know Jessie Ware, you know she brings unabashed, raw emotion to all of her songs. So if you’re craving something soulful, rich and moody, you best be hitting that play button. The album also features an emotional ballad, “Say You Love Me,” co-written by Ed Sheeran. Be sure to get your paws on this album October 21st.
4. Yuna – Yuna (2012)
I’m two years late to the Yuna game, but better late than never. The Malaysian singer has risen to international recognition in recent months and continues to win the hearts of many. Considering her voice is the aural equivalent to melted butter, I’m not at all surprised. While you’re here, do yourself a favor and listen to her flawless cover of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.”
5. Chet Faker – Built on Glass (2014)
After listening to one of his songs 53 times in one day, I think it’s safe to say I have an insatiable taste for Chet Faker. I know I’m not the only one who has this problem, so surely, this must speak to his sensual soulfulness and undeniable talent.
6. FKA Twigs – LP1 (2014)
FKA Twigs has single-handedly taken R&B and flipped it on its head. Everything from her music down to her album art is unpredictable, haunting and just . .different. It’s hard to stay true to yourself in the big biz of music, but FKA Twigs has managed to stay as rare as her sounds.
7. TV on the Radio – Seeds (forthcoming)
I’ve been enamored with these guys since Return To Cookie Mountain (2006), and I have no plans to quit this love affair. After a three-year hiatus, the guys are back with a new, genre bending album to feed your soul. Seeds is set to release on November 18th.
