Wait, how did we miss Alanis Morissette’s reissue of ‘Jagged Little Pill’?
Somewhere in the flood of new music from Adele and Justin Bieber, as well as the frenzy of “Hotline Bling” memes, we somehow missed Alanis Morissette’s MAJOR announcement.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of her pivotal ’90s album Jagged Little Pill, the singer re-released the record on Oct. 30 as a collector’s edition with unreleased demos and a live concert from 1995.
To put it in context, Jagged Little Pill was nominated for nine Grammys and won five, including Album of the Year when she was just 21 years old (14 years later, Taylor Swift would come along and win the award for Fearless at only 20 years old).
Morissette’s re-release also comes at a perfect cultural moment — women are dominating popular music right now, whether with their powerhouse vocals like Adele or Ariana Grande, or their mad songwriting chops a la Sia and Swift. You could argue that Morissette (and generations of female musicians before her) made all of that success possible.
Consequence of Sound kindly provided us with the tracklist and it has EVERYTHING. “Ironic”? Obvs. “Head Over Feet”? For sure. An a capella version of “You Oughta Know”? Oh, yes indeed. Overall there are four discs with 10 to 13 songs on each (lots of bonus tracks, people!).
“So these were songs that we were writing leading up to ‘Jagged Little Pill’ and I thought it’d be fun to share them,” Morissette told Good Morning America this week. “They’ve been in the archive vault for a while.”
Not anymore. It’s all the Alanis you could ever want, and we’re not complaining.
Basically, Jagged Little Pill was a perfectly imperfect masterpiece — an honest, heartbreaking, empowering album that deserves to be listened to again and again. It also deserves an extended encore, and that’s exactly what we’re getting. BRB, going to go scream-cry “You Learn” into my hairbrush in front of my bathroom mirror.
