Everything you need to know about being an air sign

When it comes to reading your horoscope, it isn’t enough to simply understand your zodiac sign. While that aspect can help determine your main characteristics, preferences, and behaviors, there are many other astrological influences at play, too. For instance, knowing your rising sign can help you understand how others see you. Then there are categories that each of the 12 zodiac signs fall into, like the elements, which can say a lot about your personality and how you relate to other signs in the same group.

Within the context of astrology, there are four elemental groupings—fire, air, water, and earth. Each has a set of innate traits that they share, determined by the element that guides them. Because we are in the midst of Gemini season—the first air sign of the zodiac—we asked astrologer Lisa Stardust (a Gemini herself) to explain everything you need to know if your zodiac sign is an air sign.

What it means to be an air sign

There are three zodiac signs that fall under the elemental category air: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. As air itself does not take one set shape, air signs are free-form thinkers who grasp abstract concepts pretty easily.

“Air signs are the intellectual thinkers of the zodiac,” Stardust tells HelloGiggles. “They place importance on logic and thought, rather than emotion.”

When faced with a difficult situation, air signs are quick to rationalize it and examine it from all areas rather than react instinctually. For this reason, they’re great problem solvers and are willing to help loved ones look at their issues from an objective perspective.

Air signs also tend to be big talkers. “They rely on communication and thoughts to understand themselves and the world around them,” Stardust says. This means they’re often curious about what’s going on, and will consume and share news readily. They’re always down for a philosophical conversation, and they’re not afraid of having their thoughts challenged because they’re open to learning new things.

Geminis, for example, love to strike up conversation with those around them. The talks don’t have to go deep—and Geminis are often known to gossip—but they’re sure to chat for hours on end with whomever is willing to listen. Aquariuses, on the other hand, are known for being social justice warriors who dive into complex political topics with friends and strangers alike. Libras, though, prioritize balance above all things, so they probe others to hear their perspectives so they can see all sides to an argument.

Who air signs are compatible with

When it comes to compatibility, air signs find most of their romantic connections with fire signs—Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Like air signs, fire signs are thinkers and doers. Their passionate and driven natures are attractive to air signs who enjoy seeing their partners discuss and pursue intellectual topics.

According to Stardust, air signs and fire signs “can both plot together and take action around their ideas.” Because air signs tend to look for temporary flings, getting hot and heavy with fire signs is often ideal. They both enjoy momentary connections that are intense initially, but burn out quickly. That being said, air signs do prioritize long-term relationships and are happiest with partners who are willing to listen to them talk endlessly.
