Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number
It is never too late to achieve your dreams or cross things off your bucket list. John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, made history in 1998 at the age of 77 when he became the oldest man to fly in space aboard the space shuttle Discovery. A 90-year-old woman named Mary Armstrong celebrated birthday with a 12,000ft parachute jump. An 80-year-old Japanese mountain climber, Yuichiro Miura, wants to ascend Mount Everest and in turn become the oldest person to reach the top if he succeeds. Miura has climb to the summit two times before, but now he has had heart surgery four times and it could be a little more risky. There will be a heart specialist on the team that is climbing with Miura to keep an eye on him.
“The record is not so important for me,” the white-haired Miura told Reuters in the Nepali capital, Kathmandu, before setting out for the mountain. “It is important to get to the top.”
He has also said, “If you wish strongly, have courage and endurance, then you can get to the summit of your dream.” You are never too old to accomplish dreams you set out for yourself. Even at the age of 80, Miura has additional dreams he wants to reach. “Maybe, when I become 85 years old, and if I stay alive, I want to climb and ski down Cho Oyu. It is my next dream.”
John Glenn, Mary Armstrong, and Yuichiro Miura are all inspiration for those of us who at a young age think we are already too old to dream. As the late Aaliyah (RIP baby girl) sang, “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number” and these three people prove just that.
