Mic drop: This woman stood up to the stranger who majorly shamed her for having rainbow hair

When Mary Walls Penney was intensely judged for her appearance (specifically, her awesome rainbow hair) by a total stranger, she took to Facebook to offer what was basically the best response ever by refusing to be ashamed to be herself and how she looks. The post, which was uploaded about two weeks ago, has over 150,000 shares and over 214,000 likes.

Here’s the whole story. So, while Mary was innocently out and about, a cashier confronted her about her job as a nurse, saying, I’m surprised they let you work there like that. What do your patients think about your hair?”

Like, ugh.

Mary, like many of us would have been, was stunned. In a society where women are somehow *still* held to nonsense standards of beauty, women who step beyond the “normal” boundaries of beauty are judged, and sometimes by total strangers. It’s baffling, but it’s true. Luckily, there are women like Mary out there who prove these people wrong.

Talk about sticking up for yourself!

Our bodies are our own, and how we choose to decorate (or not decorate) our bodies is no one’s business. As Mary put so eloquently, our tattoos, piercings, hair color, or other parts of ourselves have *nothing* to do with our ability to get our jobs done.

Props to you, Mary! We’ve got your back, and we’re so happy you know there’s not a single thing wrong with how you choose to express yourself.
