A preschool for adults exists and we’re so ready for our nap time
Fingerpainting, show-and-tell, arts and crafts, nap time — is it weird that we kind of miss preschool? (. . . Maybe, but we’re gonna go ahead and roll with it.)
Lucky for us, Michelle Joni Lapidos (aka Miss Joni) knows the feeling, and has opened up a preschool for adults out of her home in Brooklyn, NY. We can officially go back to hitting the (picture) books!
Lapidos — who, according to her website, has “nearly half a degree in Early Childhood Education” — started Preschool Mastermind with the hopes of bringing a little extra joy and wonder to the people who probably “need it most” (aka, us adults). As the school’s website claims, “In this one-month adventure, we’ll explore preschool concepts, like sharing and friendship, in order to apply and inject play, wonder, self-belief, and community into our grown-up lives.” And what adult couldn’t use a little extra reminder of how to have fun like a 3-year-old?
Along with her assistant teacher, Miss CanCan (aka Candice Kilpatrick, who has a Master’s Degree in Teaching and who used to teach preschool abroad), Lapidos promises all the play time your adult heart could possibly desire, plus snacks and naps to boot (the trifecta of happiness, IMO).
“One of the ideas behind the course was to bring preschool strategies to deal with adult real world problems and have people learn from each other,” Kilpatrick told USA Today, and the program sounds positively awesome. Classes take place once a week, and include activities that range from music time to class picture day. There’s even homework assignments and a field trip (because of course)!
Perhaps the best part of Preschool Mastermind, however, is the application process — a questionnaire that encourages “crayons, markers, [and] your favorite stick figures,” and asks such wonderful gems as your “#1 superpower” and if you “believe in ::magic::”. The month-long course is available on a sliding scale from $333-$999 based on what you can pay, which is certainly a pretty penny, but makes the program slightly more accessible for those looking to revel in some make believe.
While the founding class is already in session, there is set to be a new course in the fall — and we can’t wait to get our Play-Doh and paints ready and apply.
