Adele just wants to make sure we all know she’s over her ex

One of the best parts about Adele’s music is its honesty. Her songs boldly tell ex-lovers that they are replaceable, that they made a mistake dumping her, or that she’s still thinking about them. Even though her latest album, 25, hits a lot of the same heartstrings, Adele’s life has completely changed since she wrote 21.

For one, she is 100% over her ex. It kind of feels like we know this guy – the “Someone Like You” guy – after grieving with Adele through her singing. The 27-year-old Brit recently sat down with The Guardian’s Tom Lamont to give him a sneak peek of 25, which is already number one on iTunes, even though it won’t be released until November 20. One track, “Send My Love (to Your New Lover),” caught his ear – it’s about that ex, but has a new “screw you” attitude about it.

Adele told him that getting into a relationship with her current boyfriend, Simon Konecki, to whom she refers only as “my man,” tied a final knot on her loose endings feelings about her ex. “It sounds obvious, but I think you only learn to love again when you fall in love again,” she said. “I’m in that place. My love is deep and true with my man, and that puts me in a position where I can finally reach out a hand to the ex. Let him know I’m over it.” She and Simon have been together since 2012 and have a son named Angelo.

Though Adele is over her ex, she’s still writing and singing about him, or at least her experience of loving and getting over him. When asked how her boyfriend reacts to music about her former flame, Adele insisted that he can separate her career from their life together. “My man is loyal,” she said. “My man is strong. So we spoke early on, and he said, ‘Your writing isn’t anything to do with me.’ He’s fine with it. And it takes a strong man, I think, to be like that.”

In the interview, Adele also discussed how fame has affected other parts of her life, and she commented on how people are afraid to bore her in conversation. “If I go up to someone and ask what they do for a living, they’ll say, ‘Oh, that’s not very interesting, compared to what you do,’” she said. “But it is interesting. I’m interested. It’s real life, and I want to chat about it. Let’s chat about it today and let’s chat about it again tomorrow.”
