Adam Driver just spilled about playing a villain in the new ‘Star Wars’
The countdown to Star Wars: Episode VII–The Force Awakens is seriously on—it opens in just 10 days! We’re almost to the single digits, people, and fans are already going crazy. Some diehard fans in Australia are already lined up outside of a movie theater, and you can find Star Wars-themed merchandise just about everywhere you look. (There’s Star Wars Coffee-Mate, you guys. We’ve reached critical mass.)
Luke, Leia, Han and Chewy are back, and being played by original franchise actors Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew, no less. But there are also some new faces in the mix—like, say, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Lupita Nyong’o. Oh, and Adam Driver, this generation’s hipster hero.
The last few years have been very good to Adam Driver’s career. He’s taken on versatile roles, appearing in everything from Frances Ha to Inside Llewyn Davis to Girls to Lincoln. Adam has proven that he can do it all, and was handsomely rewarded with the role of the dangerously unpredictable, villainous Kylo Ren. Yes, the Force is strong with this one.
Adam stopped by Good Morning America to celebrate Star Wars Week and though the cast is remaining tight-lipped about everything, he did chat about his character (who we got a glimpse of in a recent trailer.)
So what does Kylo Ren think of Darth Vader? “Kylo Ren is definitely a fan,” he told Lara Spencer, joking that the Sith Lord is his character’s mentor. “He likes his work.”
Since everyone is careful not to spill ANYTHING about the movie, Adam instead spoke about his experience working with Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew, aka Chewbacca. “[Carrie] is very generous, and very funny, and puts everyone at ease immediately,” he said of Ms. Princess Leia.
As for the legendary Wookie? “Surprisingly emotional. There’s like, Chewbacca hug breaks. And I hate hugging. I don’t like to hug anybody,” Adam revealed. “But something about seeing him there, the costume—they had to repair a lot, because it kept disintegrating from everyone hugging Chewbacca. It’s surprisingly emotional, seeing someone that huge and that furry.”
And finally, he was asked about balancing shooting both Star Wars and Girls at the same time.
“I feel like I tend to overthink things, so I didn’t have any room to think,” Adam said of juggling the two. He also cracked a joke about showing up naked on the Star Wars set, confusing it for Girls. Well, that would have been akward.
