We wish Abercrombie Kids’ new gender-neutral collection was around when we were young

Abercrombie & Fitch’s junior line Ambercrombie Kids has done a very cool thing by launching a gender-neutral range called the Everybody Collection. At this time it’s only a capsule collection within the Abercrombie Kids brand, but it’s a start.

The company boasts on its website that the collection is for “every kind of kid and every kind of adventure.” We love that many of the items feature several kids of different gender identities modeling the same piece of clothing. The collection features a ton of hoodies, long-sleeved shirts, zip-up jackets, and sandals. However, while the brand continues to have its traditional gendered clothing categories outside this special collection, Stacia Andersen, brand president of Abercrombie & Fitch, told WWD that the Everbody collection will “become part of the ongoing assortment for kids” and that it’ll evolve each season.

We don’t know about you, but there was a time during high school and middle school for many millennials when Abercrombie & Fitch dictated what a teenage girl should look like and wear — maybe you remember the tiny denim skirts, pink waffle-knit polos, and low-rise ripped jeans of the early aughts. We would have appreciated a gender-neutral collection when we were growing up. For a brand that has faced its fair share of controversy, this is a bold and bright move in the right direction.

While we see the collection as a progressive and important decision, it feels as if the brand created the collection to fill a fashion need, rather than fill a political one.

“Parents and their kids don’t want to be confined to specific colors and styles, depending on whether shopping for a boy or a girl. Our Everybody Collection is one assortment, in one size run, that covers the trends we are seeing in both color and style,” Andersen revealed.

Regardless the reason for the collection — pushing the boundaries on binary thinking doesn’t hurt anyone. You can shop the Everybody Collection here.
