Aaron Sorkin wrote the most heartfelt letter to his 15-year old daughter after the 2016 Election
It’s been an interesting 36 hours here in the United States of America. The results of the 2016 Presidential Election, have left many heartbroken and devastated, and turning to friends, family, and those closest to us for support. If you’re still looking for even more solace, go ahead and take comfort in the letter Aaron Sorkin just wrote his 15-year old daughter. It will make you laugh, cry, and then get up and fight for democracy.
Sorkin — the mastermind behind the greatest political show on television IMHO, The West Wing, and one that he has FIVE Emmy awards for — did what he does best following the election results, and put pen to paper (or fingers to his keyboard, however he writes). He composed a short and to-the-point letter titled “Sorkin Girls,” directed at his teenage daughter, Roxy, and her mother, Julia.
The letter might have been written for them, but it’s actually for ALL OF US.
While Sorkin stars off his letter detailing what a Donald Trump presidency means for our nation, he doesn’t dwell on it. Instead, he moves onto what we can do next, and reminds us of the most important thing right now: “We’re not powerless and we’re not voiceless...The battle isn’t over, it’s just begun.”
“We get involved,” Sorkin writes. “We do what we can to fight injustice anywhere we see it—whether it’s writing a check or rolling up our sleeves. We fight for a woman to keep her right to choose. We fight for the First Amendment and we fight mostly for equality—not for a guarantee of equal outcomes but for equal opportunities.”
Sorkin acknowledges that this isn’t the outcome he voted for, but that’s not going to stop him from trying to make the world a better place for his daughter (and all of us).
“America didn’t stop being America [Tuesday] night and we didn’t stop being Americans and here’s the thing about Americans: Our darkest days have always—always—been followed by our finest hours.”
