A “Top Gun” sequel is officially happening, so get your aviators ready

Rumors have been buzzing for years, but now, it’s official: Tom Cruise has confirmed that a Top Gun sequel is happening, and he just took our breath away.

In fact, the star says the Top Gun sequel will start filming soon, and woah!

In an interview with with Australian morning show Sunrise to promote his forthcoming summer blockbuster The Mummy, Tom revealed there’s a definite need for speed, and he’s 100% on board.

The show’s host pleaded with Tom, saying, “Top Gun 2. Please say it’s true.”

Tom's response?  "It’s true. I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know, it’s happening. It’s definitely happening.

The 1986 classic is one of Tom’s most beloved roles, so it’s no surprise that he’s eager to step back into Maverick’s leather jacket and iconic shades. Last year, the producer of the original film, Jerry Bruckheimer, tweeted a photo of himself with his “old friend” Tom, writing that they spent the weekend “discussing a little Top Gun 2,” following a 2013 interview in which Bruckheimer revealed plans for a sequel.

At the time, Bruckheimer said, “We still want to do it with Tom, and Paramount are still interested in making it. What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick. It’s something he is excited about, so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we’ll get it made.”
