A new character was cast on “Game of Thrones” and he’ll be a familiar face to the Mountain

UFC fighter Conor McGregor is taking a break from MMA because his girlfriend is having a baby — but there might be another reason for his hiatus. That’s because UFC president Dana White told FOX Sports Live that McGregor was cast in Game of Thrones. TVLine reported that a rep for Game of Thrones would not comment on McGregor’s casting, but if this is true, fans of MMA and the HBO series should be pumped.

Back in June, The Belfast Telegraph had reported that a “well-placed source” had told its sister publication Sunday Life that McGregor would be in Game of Thrones.

"It's been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones," the source said. "He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of the Game of Thrones directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show."

Yet, that was months ago so this seeming confirmation from White has excited fans of the UFC champion. White’s statements were vague, but when asked if McGregor would be on Game of Thrones, he said:

“I did hear that. I knew that a few months ago that they were interested in putting him in the show. I’m glad he did it. It will be great.”

Besides the Irish fighter being a total badass in real life, another reason Game of Thrones fans should be intrigued by this casting is because he has already fought the Mountain.

That’s right — McGregor fought the Icelandic strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson who has been the most recent actor to portray Cersei’s zombified bodyguard Ser Gregor Clegane.

Okay, “fought” is a strong word for their face off, but still — McGregor is one of the few people in the world who would be willing to go up against Björnsson (zombified or otherwise).

However, Watchers on the Wall stated that McGregor’s role will have nothing to do with the Mountain.

*Potential spoilers ahead.*

Instead, they report that a source told them that the UFC fighter will have a cameo as a pirate on Euron Greyjoy’s ship called Silence. As Theon and Yara’s uncle rips the tongues out of the people who are in his ship’s crew in the books, McGregor most likely won’t even have any lines.

So while we’re sure McGregor is most excited for the new addition to his family, Game of Thrones fans are excited for the rumored new addition to the HBO series — no matter who he portrays.
