A ‘Moulin Rouge’ musical is in development so yes, it’s time to freak out
The time to brush up on your can-can skills is now. Vulture reports that a Moulin Rouge! musical is currently being developed and suddenly we’re in the mood for lifts and twirls.
The future Broadway show is in the hands of Global Creatures, which has experience with turning a Baz Luhrmann Oscar-winning film into a musical, so we’re expecting this stage show to be equally dynamic. In addition, Alex Timbers will direct the project and writer John Logan of Skyfall and Spectre fame has been tapped to write the book.
Details are scant at the moment but Global Creatures confirmed that an opening venue and start date for production will be “announced at a later date.”
While we’re excited to see Moulin Rouge! get the Broadway treatment, Luhrmann is absolutely thrilled and eagerly praised the show’s creative contributors.
“It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm,” he said.
“I first encountered Alex Timbers through the remarkable and inventive production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the brilliance of Here Lies Love,” Luhrmann added. “I immediately recognized the young director’s creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts. So I’m tremendously happy to celebrate that Moulin Rouge! will be under his direction and that the book will be the creation of the gifted Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan, whose writing I also admire deeply.”
There’s no time like the present to rewatch the original. If the magic of that film is any indication of what we’ll see on the stage, we expect it to be nothing short of musical greatness.
