Today in inspiring: This 95-year-old man just broke a major running record
Today in “It’s never too late to start exercising,” we bring you the inspiring tale of retired dentist Dr. Charles Eugster, a man who didn’t start exercising until he was 85 years old, and now, ten years later, has broken a world running record for the 200-meter dash in the category of runners 95 and older.
“I am so proud of him,” Eugster’s coach Sylvia Gattiker told The Independent. “He only started running competitively last year and he has broke all these records. It was a fantastic achievement.”
Eugster ran around the Lee Valley Athletics Centre for his record-breaking run, clocking in 55.48 seconds, shaving two seconds off the previous record. To give that time some context, note that this record-breaking run is just three times slower than Olympic and World 200-meter sprint champion Usain Bolt. I don’t know about you guys, but if I’m 95 and I’m coming anywhere NEAR Olympic records, I’m going to throw myself a birthday party every day for the rest of my life.
Also, note, that Eugster holds the British indoor record for 60-meter run, as well as the British Masters outdoor records for 100-meters and 200-meters. Because winners gonna win,
On his website, Eugster gives his advice to the rest of us lowly mortals:
“Successful aging requires work, diet and exercise. The huge mental and physical potential of the aged remains unexplored. Bodies can now be rebuilt at any age and a new life started.”
And with regards to this particular win, Eugster told The Independent “. . . it proved you can set challenges and goals at any age and achieve them”.
So what did Eugster do to celebrate this momentous achievement? He went back to his hotel room to take a nap. Because he TOTALLY earned it.
