This definitive ’90s movie is getting a sequel
You saw it, you had nightmares, you crushed on Ewan McGregor, you bought the soundtrack on CD. Make that both soundtracks. We’re talking about Trainspotting, of course—the groundbreaking ’90s indie film that introduced us to one of our favorite actors, some killer music, and some oh-so-scarring imagery. Well, it looks like we’re going to get a Trainspotting 2, folks. Danny Boyle has told Deadline that he’s not just ready to make a sequel to his 1996 film, but that there’s already a script.
In case you haven’t seen the original, the film was based on Irvine Welsh’s novel (also called Trainspotting) about a group of heroin addicts in 1980s Edinburgh. It starred Ewan McGregor, Kelly Macdonald (aka, Margaret Shroeder of Boardwalk Empire), and Jonny Lee Miller. The film focuses on Mark, played by McGregor, as he attempts to get clean. But even a move to London can’t get him totally out of the life he’s trying to escape, as his friends show up unexpectedly in need of his help.
As for the sequel, we don’t know too much yet. The script has already been written by John Hodge, who wrote the script for the original, as well. It’s based on another novel by Irvine Welsh — his 2002 title Porno. The book is set nine years after Trainspotting, with the same characters. Oh and the actors are down to reprise their roles.
“All the four main actors want to come back and do it,” Boyle told Deadline. “Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”
