9 Reasons It’s Impossible Not to Love Drew Barrymore
First and foremost, let’s all congratulate Drew Barrymore and her husband Will Kopelman, who just welcomed a new baby! Baby Frankie Barrymore Kopelman was born on April 22, she’s the second daughter for the couple and a little sister to Olive, who was born in 2012. Kudos to Drew for choosing absolutely adorable names for her two little ones. It’s definitely big news for Drew – and it’s pretty newsworthy in general, since the world was introduced to Drew when she, herself, was considerably young.
Drew grew up in the spotlight, but, unlike many child stars, she’s handled the pressure beautifully. Back in 1982, she starred in her breakout role as Gertie in the classic movie E.T., and suddenly became one of the world’s most sought-after child actresses. While she’s had hard times (like two rehab visits when she was quite young), daring times (David Letterman, anyone?) and questionable times (remember her Tom Green marriage?) she’s also had adorable, relatable, everyday-girl times. We can’t help but love Drew Barrymore, and here are just nine of the many times she’s stolen our hearts.
1. She Seriously Supports Charities
Drew has traveled twice to Kenya on missions with the World Food Programme, and has donated over a million dollars towards their goal. In 2012, after the birth of her first daughter Olive, she realized that the best way to gain control over the paparazzi was to sell photos of her and her child to People magazine – and as an added bonus, all of the money she received for the shots was given to charity.
When you’re a celebrity who knows that candids will be out there eventually, it’s a pretty smart move.
2. Even With Her Own Makeup Line, She’s Not Ashamed To Be Makeup-Free
Drew doesn’t care about leaving the house perfectly made up, and she looks absolutely gorgeous even with minimal effort. She should serve as an example, proving to us that while makeup can be a lot of fun and bring us some extra confidence, we can be stunning without it.
It’s fair to say that Drew, personally, loves playing around with makeup. Her Flower Beauty collection aims to be both fun and affordable. Prior to starting up her own brand, she was an amazing Cover Girl model for about five years.
3. That Kiss, From Never Been Kissed
I have to resort to “Fictional Drew” for a few of these, since she’s been an absolute star in so many films – and one of my favorites was Never Been Kissed. It was on television the other day, and I pretty much dropped everything to watch the moment where Michael Vartan does that Beach Boys trot down those stadium stairs, to give that amazing, publicized kiss to Josie Gellar. That kiss was probably my basis for all kisses in the history of kisses.
Also, how is it possible that this girl has such great chemistry with everyone? It’s super impressive.
4. She Helped Jimmy Fallon Fall In Love
As a lifelong Jimmy Fallon fan, I was amazed when I learned that Drew helped set him up with her business partner, Nancy Juvonen, during the filming of the pretty underrated film Fever Pitch. Drew and Nancy started running the production company Flower Films back in 1995 and eventually grew to produce much larger feature films – including, of course, Fever Pitch. Sparks flew between the two of them, and now Jimmy and Nancy are married with an adorable baby girl – who’ll hopefully grow up close to Drew’s two beautiful daughters.
5. She Has An Admirable View On Pregnancy And Motherhood
Frankie and Olive are lucky to have such a down-to-earth Mom, and hopefully they’ll follow her very healthy opinions on pregnancy once they’re older.
“I just eat everything I want, which isn’t healthy. I’m bigger this time than my first time. My doctor the other day was like, ‘Yeah, so I think maybe pull back. A little bit,’” Drew divulged to Ellen DeGeneres. “I was like, really? I thought I was doing great. I still fit into those jeans — they hurt when I wear them — but I still fit into them. I don’t ever pose, ‘I’m just so fabulous and I lose it like that.’ I want to enjoy the pasta right now! What’s 10 lbs.?”
6. She’s A Huge Advocate For Gay Rights
Drew, who identifies as bisexual, stated that “A woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful. Being with a woman is like exploring your own body, but through someone else. When I was younger I used to go with lots of women. Totally. I love it”
A few years ago, Drew joined many other protestors in Santa Monica Boulevard to protest the California Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Proposition 8, and the video above almost brought me to tears.
7. The Wedding Singer. Like, All Of It.
How many of you wanted a short and flippy haircut after Drew portrayed the absolutely adorable Julia Sullivan?
Personally, I think The Wedding Singer is Adam Sandler’s best film, with the runner up being 50 First Dates, which – ironically – also matches him up with our girl Drew. She absolutely nailed both roles.
8. As One Of Charlie’s Angels, She Reminded Us That Girls Can Kick Butt, And Work Together Amazingly.
I saw this movie in the theater by myself, and I don’t think I could have witnessed a more kick-ass film solo. And while many people felt like the friendship between Drew, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu was solely for show, it was actually genuine. They loved working together, and their chemistry throughout the movie proved it.
Drew and Cameron still hang out all the time. “She’s my sister, but we bro out and have crazy adventures. Most people don’t know this, but she’s very edgy,” Drew said.
9. She Still Holds The Record For Being The Youngest Person To Ever Host SNL
Do you remember what you were doing when you were 7-years-old? Probably learning how to cross the street and dress yourself appropriately, right? (Or was I just a late bloomer? Yikes. I might have been a late bloomer.)
Drew was the youngest person to host the incredible comedy show, and she did it with ease. (She was, of course, invited back a couple times.) Check out this clip from the cold open, and you’ll also see a considerably younger Julia Louis Dreyfuss!
Do you love Drew as much as we do?
