Why We Have Been Waiting for Fair Season All Year

It’s fair season! Yay! That means summer is halfway over. Boo. But it also means eating fried things, looking at cute (and not-so-cute) animals and riding lots of really fun rides. So, yay again! I don’t know about you, but fairs make me super nostalgic. Let’s reminisce together about why county and state fairs are the absolute best.

1. Fried food

Obviously fried food isn’t always a healthy option, but at the fair, it’s totally fine. Encouraged, even. Because at the fair, anything goes. There are so many delicious and ridiculous options. If you can think of it, they’ve probably fried it. My favorite is the fried cookie dough (the only way to make cookie dough more delicious).

2. Games and prizes

The games are basically impossible to win, but if you do win, it means you’re incredible at things. And you can win a prize the size of your house. Or bigger.

3. World’s Largest Things

Whether it’s the world’s largest pig or the world’s largest popcorn ball—things at fairs are large. Because regular-sized things aren’t nearly as exciting.

4. Animals

Visiting the animals at the fair is both a sad and happy occasion for me. Happy because animals. Sad because animals on display. Hopefully they’re well taken care of at home (it’s apparent that they’re well fed).

5. Rides

Rides at the fair are fun (granted, some of them are the nauseating-lucky-to-have-survived type of fun), but the reason they’re so great is because they’re classic. Maybe wait a few minutes in between the fried butter and the Loop-the-Loop though.

6. More food

Corn on the cob, bacon wrapped turkey legs, sausages, french fries, caramel apples, ice cream, funnel cakes, frog legs, chocolate-dipped everything, donut sandwiches, corn dogs and snow cones—the fair has literally everything. Not a lot of salads though.

7. Concerts

Most fairs have a fun list of performers. This year at the LA County Fair, LL Cool J will perform with Salt-N-Pepa, Boyz II Men will perform with Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Earth, Wind & Fire will perform with Earth Wind & Fire.

8. Monster truck rallys

Is there anything better than attending a monster truck rally? Probably. But they’re still fun and ridiculous.

9. The smells

All of these things wrapped up into one giant delicious fair smell (probably throw some B.O. in there as well, but let’s focus on the good).
