This 82-year-old woman is a successful club DJ — reminding us that it’s never too late to find your calling

Sumiko Iwamuro has always loved music, but she spent over 50 years running a dumpling restaurant. Now, the 82-year-old has become a club DJ, reminding us that it’s never too late to find and pursue your true calling. When Iwamuro’s husband passed away, she decided to enroll in DJ training at a local music school, where she discovered she has a knack for spinning rad beats.

After meeting a French event producer, she was introduced to the club scene — and now she’s a beloved fixture at DecabarZ in Tokyo.

Iwamuro, who goes by “DJ Sumirock,” still makes dumplings by day — but she spins beats at night and DecabarZ’s patrons are so here for this.

"She's got this energy that goes beyond age, and that can equal any young person's here," 25-year-old clubber Fuminari Fujii told Reuters.

Iwamuro’s love for music dates back to her childhood. During WWII, she recalls listening to jazz records — but she had to muffle the gramophone with a cushion so no one knew she listened to music from enemy Allied cultures.

The octogenarian DJ says that working the turntables isn’t all that different from running a restaurant.

"In both, results can be seen immediately. If the customer eats what you have made, it shows on his face if it is delicious; and if a DJ is good, everyone will dance happily," to AFP BB News.

She typically kicks off her set with the theme to the popular 1980s Japanese anime series Astro Boy, and her sound has been described as techno music with twists of jazz, French chanson, and classical music.

Keep on rocking out, DJ Sumirock — DecabarZ and its patrons are lucky to have you!
